Installing trim relay

I am trying to install a relay for my tilt/trim on a 73 evinrude 115. The boat did not have a relay when I bought it, so I have no guide to go by. I think I have it wired correctly, but when I hit the switch, all I get is a humming coming from the relay. I do not have a ground going to relay... Do I need one?? Thanks for any info.
Dustin

Re: Installing trim relay

I just bought a universal relay at carquest. Do I need a specific brand?

Re: Installing trim relay

My trim cable has three wires...Black, Red, and green. I am assuming the that black is ground, the red is the switch leg for the down motor, and the green is the switch leg for the up motor. Does this sound right? If so, I wanted to test the tilt motor, so I wired the black wire from the tilt moter to the neg. on battery and the red wire(down switch leg?) to the positive. The motor did not engage. Am I on the right track?? Thanks in advance for any info.
Dustin

Re: Installing trim relay

Hi Dbailey...

The original power TNT and power Tilt kits for these engines did not have relays. Can you tell us if what you have is an after market or what kind of a set up is it?

The "universal relay" you got, what is it listed for?

Thanks.

Re: Installing trim relay

Dbailey...still like to know what is the "Brand" of the TNT unit? Your discription of the three wires does not sound like old OMC. Thanks.

Re: Installing trim relay

Dustin
As OB asks, we need to know how many wires from the motor, and their colors. Then we can help wire it. You likely will need 2 relays. First we must connect the motor to see if it functions, then we'll move forward..... :)

Re: Installing trim relay

Thanks for the help guys...
As for the brand, I do not see a name on it anywhere. It came with the boat and motor, so I assumed it was an OMC. There are three wires coming from the motor... black, red, and blue. I tried connecting the black to ground and the red to positive on battery and I had power, but the motor did nothing. Thanks again.
Dustin

Re: Installing trim relay

Dbailey, I'm going to do some "assuming" here.

The black wire is the "unit" ground wire.

The red and blue wires power the motor. Assuming red is down and blue is up.
Try connecting the red and blue wire across the battery direct and see what happens. To reverse a DC motor, all that is needed is to reverse polarity. If the motor runs, reverse the leads and see if it goes in the other direction. Just tap the wires together at first to see if the motor runs.

It is possible that the red wire is just power and the battery ground wire is flopped between the black and blue to reverse the motor. It's hard to say without knowing the unit

Also, can you decribe the unit you have? Does it set between the transom brackets or to the side. Does the unit bolt to the motor or does the motor bolt to the TNT unit.

Keep us posted. Thanks.

Re: Installing trim relay

As you can tell, I know next to nothing about this stuff...
The trim unit(The cylinder on the outside of the transom with the wires going into top) is mounted beside the ouboard. It is bolted to the bracket that holds the hydraulic lift. One quick question about last reply..."connect red and blue wires across the battery direct..." Are you saying to connect both blue and red wires to the battery at the same time?? Thanks for all the help.
Dustin

Re: Installing trim relay

Ok... I reread your reply and I understand what you were saying. I held the black on the ground and the red on the positive... after about a second the wire burned the heck out of my finger. Is this due to a short somewhere?? Thanks again.
Dustin

Re: Installing trim relay

It sounds to me like there is a motor problem. If you connected wrong, you may have damaged the motor windings. Black to battery neg and red to battery pos should give operation...... :(
