'87 175hp v6

I'm about to put in a new pump impeller. i have manual but am a little confused about reinstalling the gear housing. As I read it-

To remove: Shift engine into neutral and remove gear housing. OK got that!

To install: "Shift gear housing into forward gear and place guide block anchor pin into forward gear position."

Questions:
How do I shift gear housing into forward gear?

To place guide block into forward position do I just move shift control handle to forward?

Thanks

Re: Installing water pump impeller

I always put mine in reverse, I think it works better.

To put into reverse, turn the shaft counter-clockwise on the lower unit until you feel resistance. Take some pliers, grab it and turn it...it will feel a little like it has hit a notch. Turn the prop. It should free spin both ways. Then turn the shaft one more click. The prop should turn only 1/3 a turn in either direction. If it won't turn in one direction (or turns the shaft) and ratchets the other direction, it's in forward gear.

Let me know if this helps.

k

I usually do it in Neutral. Works for me. The reason for putting it into gear is so you can turn the prop to get the driveshaft splines to line-up with the crankshaft. I nudge the flywheel instead. I don't like to move water pump impellers backwards.

however it is when you take it off (F/N/R), unless you turn the shift shaft while the LU's off or move the shifter in the boat, you just put it back on the same way (so don't turn the shift shaft, or monkey with the controls!). You don't need to when doing the water pump anyway.

I agree with thumbing the flywheel over to align the spines on the driveshaft... that's where an extra set of hands helps. Also, lightly grease the spines on the driveshaft, but don't put grease on the end of the shaft (there's no room for it to get out the way when re-installing).

Good luck.

Brent
