instead of rerouting telltale would a longer hose do?

I have a 3 cyl 60p '89. I was going to reroute the telltale to the top of the block but I was told that running a longer hose over the top of the block would be easier and provide the same purpose. Is this true? or should I carry out the re route (although I really don't want to drill holes in my motor).

The longer hose is the way mine is routed on my 1987 Johnson 150; it works just fine.

You ever had any over heat problems with your motor Will Bark?

Only when the thermostats went cruddy; replaced them and no problems in five years. Hose works fine running from the bottom over the top and then down to the telltale outlet.

I thought the idea behind this modification was to prevent air pockets around the upper cylinder?

If that is the case, I can't imagine how routing the hose up and over does anything about trapped air pockets?

Here's a link to a FAQ dealing with this issue and includes an OMC Service Bulletin specifically covering three-cylinder models. Good luck!

See the end of the original post at the page you suggested ,at the bottom it says

"If you don't want to relocate the outlet to a higher spot on the engine, it is advisable to re-route the hose over the engine block to prevent air from entering the system."

this is the reason for me starting the thread.
