If you don't have the special tools for setting gear heights, don't waste your time putting in new gears. They won't last long.

i've learn much from the three posters above me, so i'm not the pro, as ya know... ;)

anyways. i would also be concerend about metal fragments mixing with the lub. assuming the teeth broke off then got crushed up, mixing the fragments with the lub, which circulates all throughout the drive. when crushed gear teeth are involved, best i understand, the drive (upper and lower) needs to be disassembled and cleaned thoroughly for the job to turn out well.

you guys might be in luck for specialty mercruiser tools since Claud was in tight with Carl... ;)

Along with the tools for R+R the bearings, and to dismantle the lower for cleaning!

Re: Instructions for replacing upper gears?

Thanks for the replies guys, we have the tools so that is not a problem, we can tinker pretty well :) we just do not do motor or drive work here at our shop, but am always up for a new adventure. I had a spare drive but one of the upper bearings was bad... but the gears were good :) we were hoping to be able to have at least one good outdrive, but not it looks like it will be a longer project.
