Hi,

I am new to boating and looking into boat insurance for the first time. It's for a new 18 foot bowrider that will be used in Quebec, Canada. I live in Ontario so I am looking at insurance companies that provide insurance in either of these provinces.

The company that insures everything else that I own is asking what I think is a rediculous price for it ($950.00). I've checked with a few lesser known companies that specialize in marine insurance and I am getting prices closer to $400 or $500, however I'm a little worried about these companies that I have never heard of before and wonder how they would be if I needed to make a claim.

I was wondering if anybody could reccomend a company located in Canada that they know is good, or could give me any suggestions.

I would trust a company that specializes in marine insurance before any of the ones used to insure only homes or automobiles. The way the market is here now, they are all out to scr  us anyway. Way unreasonable rates. 400 to 500 per year seems reasonable. The important thing is to be aware of the limitations in the policy. In my coverage, I am limited to a specific geographical area, if I want to trailer/cruise outside that area, I must purchase additional coverage. Hope this helps.

Hi, I went thru this 3 yrs ago when we started boating. Our regular insurance company kept calling back and asked the same stupid questions over and over again then increased the premium.

I took the Canadian Power and Sail Squadron safe boating course, joined CPSS, and in the package was a brochure from:
http://www.cowandalton.com/

They have a deal with the CPSS that gives discounts to members. But I'm sure they would deal with non-members. (it wouldn't be a bad idea to take the course and join)

We changed brokers here in town and the new one was able to deal with Cowan Dalton for us.

Hope this helps.

Greg

Thanks for the info.

Greg S: Cowan is actually one of the companies that I had come accross that I had not seen. They had reasonable rates. Have you had to deal with them for anything asside from renewing your insurance? If so, how did they treat you? Do they have good customer service?

Thanks for the replies. If anyone else has any other opinions, please let me know. Thanks!

Thankfully I have not had to deal with them at all (other than an online quote). I can only hope that if I need them it won't be a problem. My broker is the one who looks after the billing.
Before I found out that I could deal thru a local broker, I got an online quote from them. It was quick and the best part is that it was identical to the price quoted by my broker about a week later.
FYI it was around $500.00 for my 2001 Horizon 170. It went down some after my CPSS membership.

Greg
