I was driving my boat this past weekend and I blew out a rod in the motor. The motor is knocking so bad I was forced to have sea tow pull me into the dock. I am insured for this type of engine problem as long as the problem was not preventable. I always service this boat and the motor was rebuilt last year. All repairs are done by my father who has been a mechanic for about 40 years. He owns a repair shop for cars but the motor in this boat is a chevy 350 and all repairs similar. My insurance company wants me to get a quote for tearing down the motor to determine what the problem is. They will pay for a tow to a repair shop, pulling the motor out and tearing it down to determine the problem. Then they decide if they pay for a new motor. I called every marina on the east coast and nobody will touch this boat for a few weeks. if I wait i might as well kiss the 2008 season goodbye. My father's repair shop is going to give the estimate on pulling the motor and tearing it down. The problem is he does not usually do that kind of work for customers(however has done mine and his boat for many years) so he has no idea how much the estimate should be for. I need to know a close number on how much a marina would charge to pull my motor and tear it down. My father can make a recipt for the insurance company so they send me a check and he can just do the repairs. I guess the bottom line is how much would a marina charge to pull a motor out of a 1982 larson with a chevy 350 omc strinnger drive. I just need a rough estimate so I can give the insurance company a close number from my fathers repair shop. I need to get this fixed asap.
