Insurance - who do you have and like?

It is time to get a new policy and I am looking for feedback on the best insurance companies without breaking the bank. Anyone have any good feedback? Obviously, cheaper is not always better, but I don't want to overpay either.

I've been with Amica for 30 years, home, auto, and now boat. Every time I shop them they still come up tops...not cheapest but coverage and service have been simply outstanding. Not a big company but extremely well respected and they get my vote.

Switched from Boat US to Progressive and saved a ton of dough on the policy. Progressive is a lot easier to negotiate agreed hull value with, Boat US was a pita. Progressive doesn't seem to offer some of the specialty coverages like freeze damage whereas Boat US does, however Boat US's disclaimer for freeze damage pretty much leaves you SOL in any realistic circumstance ie: negligence cannot be proven on winterization procedure.

I haven't had to make a claim so I can't comment on that subject but I've read Boat US is much better for settling claims like running gear/outdrives damage, stolen gear etc. My main concerns are total loss due to a catastrophic event, or a fuel spill on the river. Both of these scenarios seem to be pretty iron clad with Progressive as it's more along the lines of basic coverage.

So, I would say if you're trying to insure a boat with a lot of gear that could be stolen, or canvas that could be damaged in a wind storm then Boat US would be my choice. But if you're just looking for basic coverage then I'd go with Progressive.

Just my opinion.

I did a couple of online quotes that all came in around $1300 - $1500, but Progressive was $4500!! Maybe I entered something wrong...

In Michigan we have some crazy insurance ( auto no-fault sucks) but I have all my insurance, car, home, motorcyle and boat through the same company , Auto Owners. The agency was able to put a rider on my homeowners even though the boat is kept in a slip during the summer months and stored off site in winter. It was by far the most cost efficient.

Try Farm Bureau. I got an estimate from BoatUs and Progressive. They were twice as much as Farm Bureau for 1/2 the coverage.

Wow that is a lot of dough for insurance. I have basic agree value of 20,000 policy with nationwide and it's only $183.00 per year.

Should you have a spill and receive a clean up bill for $500,000.00 who pays?

i have allstate and it's about $200 a year for my 22' pontoon. They treat the motor and the boat separate, but i have a replacement value of 14k which is good for me. I did up the coverage though just in case my boat would come undocked somehow and wind up into the side of a mega yacht

Check with your homeowners ins. They may not cover boats, but mine had deal with Progressive. I basically got a significantly reduced rate with them by going through my homeowners ins. company to acquire the coverage.

.

I've been considering doing just that! Just waiting till I return from this camping trip with the boat! My boat U.S. premius went up nearly 50% this year for my 16yo boat and I've never made a claim! Heck- boat was in our yard and un-affected by Hurricane Sandy!

I have everything with Farmer's (Foremost is their toy coverage line). I've been exceptionally happy with them.

Same as if i get sued and lose owing $500,000 in a settlement. Nobody because you can't squeeze blood out of a turnip.

A $2million umbrella policy will cover the 1st and Boat US would cover the 2nd.There is such a thing as over insured-- but underinsured is worse.

Boat US here (although they are the broker, not the underwriter). They've treated me right over the years, plus their on water and trailer assist service is the best!
