Hey guys

I am trying to drain the water out of my Volvo Penta GL 4.3L V6 intake manifold. It has a square pipe plug and I can't find any thing to fit it in my socket set. I can't get a cresent wrench in there. Please see the illustration photo to see what plug I am talking about. Thanks

Should be able to jam a regular socket on it, or just buy the correct tool for the job - pipe plug sockets.

Ayuh,.... Ya need either an 8-pt socket, or a 12-pt socket to fit a square pipe plug,.... a 6-pt won't work,...

Donno the size, measure it,...

Once ya get it out, it'll be either 1/4"pipe, or possibly 1/2" pipe,....
Get yerself a brass hex-head pipe plug of the right size from yer local hardware store,....

I believe either a 1/4 or 5/16 12- point may work (assuming the corners are not buggered).

Hoewver a set of square drive sockets would be best

Thanks for the help guys. So I went to the hardware store to get the correct socket size. For the life of me I could not torque it off. I got pissed off so I took the thermostat housing right off and definitely see water in there. With the housing off I was able to get a cresent wrench in there. Still can't get it off. I'm wondering if it was ever been pulled off. Last year it was winterized by a marine shop by previous owner. Not sure what else to do beside pour antifreeze down the hole?

Heat it up with a propane or map torch, then hit it with some pb blaster , let it cool some put a wrench on it and repeat until it comes out.

Worked like a charm. Pb blaster and breaker bar got her off. Was still a battle but got it done. Now to find a brass hex head. I went to Home Depot, lowes, princess auto and Rona. None of those place have them which I find hard to believe.

I googled "volvo penta manifold drain plug" and got a ton of hits. Automobile manifolds don't have drains, so I'm not surprised that auto parts stores don't have them.
