I am swapping parts from my cracked block 1983 Mercruiser 305/5L MCM228 (Serial# 6275628) to an 898 Mercruiser 305/5l (serial # 5403332). The 898 has a 2 barrel carb and I was thinking of replacing it with the MCM228 4 barrel carb (with Thunderbolt ignition). It appears though, that this also requires swapping the intake manifolds. Suddenly it doesn't seem like a good idea anymore. Is there anyway around not having to swap intake manifolds when swapping the 2 barrel for a 4 barrel?

nothing is complicated about switching a SBC intake. Pull distributor, mark rotor position, pull the bolts an remove intake. Don't bother with the end gaskets on the intake, just use black RTV

In the old days they made adapters for us young'ens (at the time, now old guy) to be able to put a 4brl on top of a 2brl intake. We thought that was groovy. They really didn'twork because the air flow opening needed to operate the 4brl wasn't there. Just burned more gas and on a boat probably burn the engine a lot sooner. They may still make those adapters but I wouldn't recommend it.

Your just talking an intake gasket, so just swap the intakes, they will fit.

Thanks for the advice. I thought I would have to replace head gaskets.
