Hey guys,
Here's one for you. I've got a 57 fastwin 18 that I run on my boat. Last year I had someone give me a 71' motor(motor only) that still has all the pieces on it. I don't know what size it is but it looks the same as my fastwin's motor. I know the pull rope assembelly will fit but I was wondering what else I can use off this eng. as back-up parts. The only thing i was told about it is that it had something serious wrong with it and the guy who had it just had it laying around his carport for the last few years.
Thanks
Here's a little update and a question.
On top of the breather assembelly there is a little yellow tag that say "1976 35 HP"( sorry i was thinking it was a 71') and a hand written tag the guy I got it from had on there that says needs work. I can see what looks like the seal on the head is blown out in one spot. Where is the ID tag on this motor ( I looked but cannot find the plug that my 18 has it stamped onto on this motor) and would it be worth checking into fixing this motor with out knowing what else might be wrong?

When you say he gave you the motor only, do you mean he gave you the powerhead only? Thats kinda what we assume.

Several motors were pretty much the same in those days. If the parts bolt up, they should work.

Yes all I have is the what I guess is the powerhead(I,m learning all this as I go if you can't tell).
Now I have a new question. Will the 76' powerhead fit onto the 18HP fastwin leg?

No. It's an entirely different design. And the gearcase wouldn't hold up even if you could.

Well congrats on finding out its newer than you thought. Unfortunately, like Paul said, that an entirely different animal. Some things may bolt up but not many. The carb should but you may have to play with linkages.

Is there a way to find out if the motor is salvagable short of pulling it apart? And where is a good place o find a leg that will fit this motor?
Thanks again

Re: Interchangable parts?

I'd start by pulling it apart. If the crank is bad and/or the block is shot then you may be better off looking for a whole motor.

Theres nothing to lose. Lets get it apart and see what we got!

Thanks guys,
I'll probably start taking it apart next week while working on getting my 18 fastwin ready for the water.
