I live near a shallow lake and prop sheering is common due to stumps. Do the polyurathane interchangeable prop hubs that come with some props allow for the prop to slip instead of sheer off? I'm looking for something to limit damage to my lower unit in the event that I accidentally hit one.

The modular plastic hubs are designed to fail, to protect the drivetrain, just like the older permanent rubber hubs. However, over the years I have learned to hit bottom less and with less force, and have never had one of them fail, so I do not have first-hand experience.

While most times I don't recommend them, a composite prop with replaceable blades might be the way to go for you. Hit something and the blade(s) breaks off, protecting the lower unit. Carry a couple of tools and a couple of extra blades and repair the prop right on the water.

Frank, thank you for the information. I'll look at those and do some research on them to see if I think it's a viable option.

plastic and composite props are a total waste of money. they give terrible performance and often break without even hitting anything.
the cost of spare blades is high, 3 new blades is similar to a new alloy prop.
if you hit something with the engine spinning then the chance of it just hitting one blade is around 1,000 to 1.
buy a real prop and stay away from composite crap.
