May I ask what you are putting a short shaft 60HP motor on?

A 16ft flat bottom jon boat...... I know I can raise the motor 5", but it will look better if I didn't have to.

Thats a lot of motor for a jon boat. Is the transom able to take it?

Re: Interchangeability question

Let me ask you this, do you have the lower unit short shaft off the 50hp or are you looking at purchasing it? I know a really great company that sells short shaft/longshaft conversion kits for less than you could buy a questionable motor/ lower unit for.

I can get that whole motor with a messed up powerhead for $275.00 ...... will it work?

Can I put my powerhead on it, I already have about come to the conclusion my tilt and trim wont work ......without rigging.

I sure would like the link for future such as my Stingers.

Yeah, I brace them a lot better ..... I use a 35 on my 12 ft, never can have too much motor you know!

Re: Interchangeability question

The company is www.twincityoutboard.com tcoutboard@tcoutboard.com is the email address. I enquired about getting a longshaft conversion kit for my 9.9 and they told me it is $150.00 for the kit. It is probably worth a shot to see A) if they offer a long -> short shaft conversion for your motor and B)if the two (50 and 60hp)are compatible. They specialize in Johnson bottom ends, so I am sure that they can help you. If memory serves me correctly, I believe that in 86-88, the Johnson 35, 40 and 50 shafts were compatible.I believe that you are in luck about the driveshaft though. From 1975-1985 the 40, 50, 55 and 60 hp driveshafts are compatible. Keep in mind that you will also need to cut the water supply line tube shorter (or remove the powerhead and install a shorter tube) and get the proper shift linkage (which will may require powerhead removal on this series motor. I CANNOT TELL YOU HOWEVER, IF THE SHIFT SHAFT IS INTERCHANGEABLE OR NOT. This guy even backs me up about the driveshaft compatibility.........http://www.ebay.com/itm/NOS-OMC-396938-LONG-DRIVESHAFT-EVINRUDE-JOHNSON-1975-85-40-50-55-60-HP-/330654778850?pt=Boat_Parts_Accessories_Gear&vxp=mtr&hash=item4cfc8f85e2"] Long story short, email T and C and see if they have a kit before you try and buy anything.

Re: Interchangeability question

Thanks, I may tear my motor down and take the shaft and such with me and go look, but it is a 150 mile drive.

I will contact TC, thanks for the link.

I have a long shaft conversion for a 9.9 if you still need one.

Re: Interchangeability question

I have some stingers that are 20"
The original 15" Stinger had the small "nitro" gear case and no trim from factory. For trim you used the racing setup where a trim cylinder was mounted partially thru transom and wired to 2 battery's,12v for up and 24 v for down
