interchangeable lower units??

Hi, I was wondering if a lower unit from a 1982 140hp johnson 20" shaft or leg would be useable on a 1984? (I think) johnson 115 hp also 20" shaft or leg? I have already swaped the tilt over to the 115 no problems just checking the gear fluid after running the boat last night and I def. have water in the oil.. I had just put fresh oil in the 115 and it turned kinda of milky.. I know the 140 lower unit is good the powerhead went bad just looking to get one out of twoalso have new waterpump and gear oil in the 140 unit Thanks ,Bill
