I have searched lots of discussions but did not find a problem like this.
I have 77 2.3l OMC and here is what happens.
Starts like a charm, idles good, responds to accelerator in idle - no problem-
When I put in in gear (forward or reverse), it goes only to about 800 to 900RPM and then chokes down if i press accelerator more. It backfires and dies. I can not push accelerator fast to "pass" the point - it dies also.
Nevertheless, if I just keep it running (in gear, in water)) at 800-900 RPM for about 5 min it suddenly goes up slowly and then I do not have any more problems for as long as I do not turn the engine off - then the story goes from the beginning!
One more thing, the engine does not warm up (stays along 120 even if I run it at 3000 RPM in idle for couple of minutes)) untill it goes over those 1000 RPM.

With the engine OFF, Check the accelerator pump and see if it is squirting fuel into the carb when the throttle is opened.
I would also check the dwell and timing.
Are you sure the engine isn't an 87? OMC didn't use the 2.3 in 77.

OK, maybe it is 2.5 but is definitely 77
By the way, the tune up is done recently, and the problem just started yesterday and on a second run. Started out normally, went to a first fishing spot, and when I wanted to move it started acting like that.

And yes, it is squirting fuel in carb when engine's off. It runs perfectly normaly with no load. Just does not warm up.

It makes a big difference, the 2.5 is a Chevy engine, and the 2.3 is a Ford.

It also sounds a lot like water in the fuel. Do you have a water seperating fuel filter.

Yeah it is a Chevy. As far as the separating filter, I do not know if I have one (fairly new to this), but isn't it strange that everything works fine once the engine goes over 1000 RPM (after 5 min). If I do not have filter or it is faulty, how is it possible that "it works itself out" after that period of time?

If a filter is not there, install one, and have spare ones. That is the first step

Idle circuit in carb gummed up or has it been tuned lately?

Re: Interesting OMC engine problem

Thanks for posting guys, I will do all these things and see what happens. I had nothing but problems with this boat and it is driving me nuts by now. I would like to have one lake trip without problems.
