2005 chap 220 ssi with volvo 5.0L GX-i

ive been noticing a fair amount of water in the bilge on our recent outings. couple of gallons after a 4-5 hour trip. The water is still a bit cool, so there isnt any swim action taking place so its not being carried in on our suits and jackets. so i decided to investigate.

I have found the following.

with the boat in the water, no engine running. = no leak

with engine running, i get a slow trickle of water dripping from the back of the block. its not coming down the transom, its actually dripping from before that. I cannot see under there to tell, but it seems like the exhaust runs under there.

it does not, however, do this on the hose at home.

The PO told me they just had the risers replaced right before i bought the vessel, could it be an issue with the install of these causing the leak? could it be the water pickup tube from the lower?

Any ideas??

Repeat the steps to cause it to leak - take a camera and set it to video and reach back in the engine compartment and film everything you can. Be careful around moving parts and belts.

Re: interesting water leak

It might be the lower exhaust bellow leaking or possibly a loose hose clamp on the bellow. The PO would have had to disconnect the upper bellow where it connects to riser. The tech might of pulled the riser and elbow. It may not leak in driveway because there is no resistance against the exhaust gases until the boat is in the water. Just a thought.

Re: interesting water leak

I've just had my boat ('03 2101 Striper, 5.0 GXi - C) in the water after having the manifolds and risers replaced. Same issue with water in the bilge that wasn't common before the work was done. Also, though, after a great week of prawn fishing, the boat went into the apparent "safe" mode - wouldn't exceed 2000 RPM. I know these engines have had fuel pump issues that cause a similar RPM issue - but could a problem with a faulty hose clamp on the bellow also put the boat into safe mode?

The water pick up hose would be filled with water as the boat sits not running in a lake. You stated it's not leaking when engine is off. Where are you connecting the garden hose at? Are you using muffs or directly to flush hose on engine? If you are using muffs it is a lot less water volume compared to the boat sitting in water.

this engine has a flush connection up in the engine compartment. it does not use muffs. water does flow out of the intake grill on the lower when its connected though.

Ok, so many new discoveries have happened since i posted this thread.

We went out on the holiday a bit fuller then we normally do, and had to store stuff under the front seats. We then found the stuff to be wet after just a short trip to the restaurant.

The boat has a "cooler" under the bow center cushion, that drains to a thru hull drain on the starboard side. Its only about 3in about water level. I did some research, and found reports of the drain hose not even connected from the factory, so i opened up the bulkhead do have a look.

The hose was connected, and had sealer inside it, so i had the SO spray the area outside with the hose, while i did a headstand in the storage locker to have a look. sure enough, the thru hull was leaking. I RnR'ed it and used some marine goop to seal it up. We will see on the next outing, but im hoping this cuts back a lot of the water in the bilge.

I still have the weird leak at the back of the engine, but i cant figure that one out yet. I checked all the exhaust clamps and they are all tight. I think it may be the water pickup hose, but i just cant get back there to see anything.

The leak at the back.
The sell a small mirror with an extender on it.
Get one and a good light and start upside down in the bildge:)
Take the starter out and see if there is any rust in there?
Rust? Then possible the casting plugs popped?
You live in a freeze zone? Fill out the profile, location.

I have it filled out, so im not sure why you cant see it. I live in SE houston, so not a heavy freeze zone. Its coming from the VERY back, like almost between the engine and transom. I think it has something to do with that exhaust collector. Ill try the mirror thing you mentioned.
