Re: Interlux 404 Primer advice

I have been sanding for weeks and finally brushed on my first coat of Interlux primer 404. Before applying, I used fiberglass surface wash to remove waxes, etc. When primer dried, it had a speckled pattern on the surface, kind of like a golfball. The imperfections in the surface were not difficult to sand out. The primer was not level when dried. Do I need more thinner (2333N)in the primer (404) for next coat?

Something is wrong. It sounds like oil, wax or water was on the surface to make the "fisheyes". Was this a new or used brush? It could be contamination from other paints, cleaners, etc. 404 needs to go on VERY thin for best results. That means thinning with 2333N up to 25% for best leveling. Foam rollers make it easier than brushing.

Could you post pic's of the paint, Prime-kote is not so much a paint as it is some kind of fiberglass resign and incredibly hard to sand, rolling it would be tough and a night mare to straightn out in my opinion....shoot first ask question's later.........:D

Assuming you used a roller to apply it, it sounds to me like you may have missed a step. Primecoat will go on pimpled or "stippled" with a roller alone. That is why it is recommended to apply an even coat with a thin nap foam roller and then immediately "tip" it with a badger or china bristle brush as you apply it. This flattens the stippling and evens out the coat even further. If you rolled it on and left it to dry, it dried with the stipples.
No major problem though. Sand it, sand it, and sand it some more until it is smoothed out and roll/tip another coat. Then sand it, sand it, sand it, sand it........and when you have had enough sanding, sand some more. (not all the way through, obviously) ;)

If they looked like pimples it could be air bubbles. Did you mix and let it sit 15-20 minutes before using? It lets the bubbles excape. If you didn't follow that procedure it may be what you are seeing. Using a foam roller with max thinning is the easiest and best way for a mirror smooth finish with this product. Foams put the thinnest coats on compared to brushes. Brushing is harder all the way around.

Re: Interlux 404 Primer advice

Thank you for your advice. I realize now that I did not wait for the bubbles to escape the product. Truly an unforgiving mistake! They were worse where I began painting.
After sanding out the bubbles, I reapplied the primecoat with a high quality foam roller/brush. I also used 25+% of 2333N to thin and, most importantly, waited twenty minutes for those damn tiny bubbles. Second coat looked great.
As of yesterday, sanded the second coat of primecoat with 320 grit. Much easier than last time.
Any tips as I start painting this week. Should I thin to max to get the paint smooth?

Are you reapplying anti fouling paint or something else? If you are applying anti fouling it shouldn't be thinned at all - there are hot weather exceptions - their directions for that are on the can.
