Interlux suggestions...

Ok...after messing around with the paint my boat dealer gave me.... I'm come to the realization that it SUXS!! http://forums.iboats.com/bbBoard.cgi?a=viewthread;fid=26;gtid=1278880

I started looking around and searching. Everyone, most anyway, like the way Interlux goes on a deck. Here are my questions. My deck( marine wood) is in good condition. It does have scratches and nicks from coolers and just all around use. They have not gone through the paint though.
I thought about the "perfection" from Interlux, but on their website it says you can't lay it down over another paint coat. In order for me to use this paint . What would you guys recommend to put on the floor? Pre-kote or Epoxy primekote(after some sanding) to prime the floor and then drop the "Perfection? THe primekote would be better for some spider cracks that I have. Or do I have to sand away the previous coat in order for me to use the "Perfection"?.
IF this is the case....then I would rather just to go with their "brightside" paint. THe deck is not in bad condition at all. IT's just that I like keeping my girlfriend looking new8) and I really don't wanna do a full blown project as far as sanding the hell out of the deck to drop some paint.

There's No paint made by Nobody that'll give satisfactory results,........

Without the Sanding,+ Prep Work............ Period..........

If you Don't want to Sand,......... Don't even Think about Painting.........

I don't mind the sanding, but do I have to remove all the paint that was laid down before? Or can I sand so the primekote has something to grab on to?

It depends on the type of paint on the boat, and more importantly, it's condition. if the existing paint is sound, just sand it smooth. I like a 200grit wet/dry final sanding to give a fine finish. Now use a primer recommended by the paint. If the esisting paint is peeling or bubbling, you will likely need to remove it. Interlux makes paint remover. I used it yesterday, and it took off the paint w/o harming the gel coat, just like it said it would.

It's Polyester Resin and it's only on the deck where I"m looking to do this. The condition is good, just faded. Like I said, I like keeping my girlfriend looking pretty. I don't want it to get up to a point where I finally hit the wood. It's got scratches on it from coolers and stuff, but nothing has penetrated the paint. I wanna sand it evenly so the primer has something to hold on to. Then apply the "perfection" paint. Sanding is not a problem. I just want to understand clearly whether or not I have to take the paint completely out. I'd rather not since it is "still" in good condition.

If it is polyester resin, that means it is gelcoat, likely the original, correct? That's easy, sand it with 100 grit paper to get the scratches out, then work your way to 220 grit wet/dry paper. Now read the paint can to see if you need primer on bare fiberglass, and follow the instructions.

If there is any new fiberglassing done at all, you will need to use Prime-Kote, Pre-Coat will blush with recent fiberglass work.(the final paint)

Yes, it's the original factory coat that is on the floor. ok , I guess go with 100 , then switch to 200 and read the instruction.

There is no rework or additional work that has been added. LIke I said, It's just faded and has scratches. I wanna put a new coat , before the original paint goes to hell. I don't wanna have to pull up any wood cause water got at it or that it is at a point where the paint is flaking off. I'm Mr. Preventive when it comes to my girl friend and making her look pretty.8)

One of those two you mentioned (I forget which) is made for use as a barrier primer between old paint and interlux paints. Do some digging on the interlux site and you'll probably find your answer.

It is my understanding that compatibility with Perfection is not a matter of adhesion. Perfection is not compatible with other paints because it is made using very strong solvents. These solvents can harm the underlying coatings a generally muck things up.

I am not aware of a primer that Interlux makes that will act as a barrier under Perfection. I do know that Pre-Kote is not one. It is not recommended for Perfection.

o Not Use INTERTHANE PLUS 2300 Series Polyurethane or any two-part catalyzed product over Prekote «. Prekote must be sanded prior to overcoating with one-part topside finish.

Epoxy Primekote can be used with any topside paint but it is the recommended primer for use with two-part finishes such as Perfection and can also be overcoated with Toplac, Brightside, Interlux Yacht Enamel, Interdeck and Bilgekote. It is also used as part of a system to re-surface cracked and crazed gelcoat prior to the application of topside paint.

I feel your pain. The interlux information takes some digging, but eventually you'll find it if you persevere and wade through it all. They could sure use some technical writing help over there at interlux.

What really kills me is their "help to" videos. I click on all of them , but I keep getting errors. They could make it user friendly where you could download them, but hey!! That would be too easy.:|

2. Get some Interlux surfacing putty to finish any unsandable soution's and sand that smooth
3. Spray the primkote and sand, be prepared to apply as many as three coating's
4.Take the perfection and roll it. or spray it. and be happy.........8)
5. Do it in 70 degree heat and low moisture, and do not forget to wipe down any painted surface with acetone prior ot paint, then sit back and admire your pre prep sanding................all the work will show.

What'd be really helpful is a nice table showing finish paints and their compatible or required primers, solvents, etc.

In choosing what to use, I had to lay all the info sheets out in little piles and trace through all the solvents, cleaners, primers, etc to make sure each little pile was compatible.

TG, what is Interlux surfacing putty? Any different than Bondo Glazing putty?
