Picked up a project boat. 3.0L 1983 alpha 1 gen 1 .work wor on lower today when a broken part fell out. It is the shoe from the top of the intermediate shaft. Previous owner snapped it off. Got the rest of the shaft out and ordering a new one.

Question - I know the shoe fits in the u-channel above it on the upper and the shaft goes down the hole below it. How does it go in? It looks like the shaft is too long for the space I have. I'm sure I'm missing something simple.

Ah, you need to split the drive to fit the new shaft....

Assuming that is the hex bolt and the 5 other standard bolts that drop the lower, I've done that. It still doesn't look like there is room to get a new one in .

The whole drive needs to be off the boat. Not just the lower...

Ah. So the six horizontal bolts come out to pull the upper part. Once that is off, anything else? I looked for a YouTube vid on replacing this part but I didn't find it .

There won't be... It's a very simple part to replace, just remember to fit a split pin.
Once you have the upper housing off, you can do all the usual ANNUAL maintenance items... ;)
grease the unis, and gimbal bearing, check the engine alignment, inspect the bellows, check the upper shift shaft seals... :D

If you dont have a manual and dont know how things come apart and knowing this part is almost impossable to just break
what else is wrong with the drive? see 3A-24 in here http://www.boatfix.com/merc/Servmanl/6/6A3R3.PDF#[0,{%22name%22:%22XYZ%22},-7,792,1]
