99.9% of the time the engine runs just fine. Top speed 42-43 mph, proped for 4100-4200 rpm wot as per manual, oil pressure steady @ 50psi, temp steady at 160*. Sounds nice and smooth.

Three seperate times now after running for approx. 35-45 min at about 35-38 mph, the engine starts to drop RPM's in a 'surging' pattern. If left alone, the RPM's keep dropping lower and lower at each dip, sort of 'down 3, up 2'. If I pull the throttle back to idle for a min, then come back on plane, it runs just fine again. Each time this has happened we have been heading to our cabin on a local lake. It happens about 3/4 of the way there, so we're only about another 10-15 min away. First two times was on the way up, the last time was on the way back. The incidents were seperated by weeks to months, so I'm not sure where to start looking . Any suggestions from the iboats brains?

Replace fuel filters, strip and clean carb...

How old are the plugs and points?

Oops, should have put that info in. It did it once last fall, and twice this summer. I replaced points and plugs beginning of this summer. New fuel filter too. No signs of water or gunk in gas. Tank was pulled and repaired about 3 yrs ago, so I know it's clean. Carb was rebuilt at that time, along with new coil, plug wires, cap/rotor, fuel lines. There's no change in engine temp or oil pressure when it happens, so I'm thinking it's either a fuel or electrical issue. It happens so infrequently I'm not sure how to try to troubleshoot it.

Maybe the float is getting hung up? Hows the fuel pump giving you enough?

Real, real ole girl there.

I would run this fuel system test. http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=167561 especially the part with the clear hose. A slight air leak in the system from the fuel tank to the fuel pump could cause such a problem. loose hose clamp, corroded seal surface on a filter, could be the cause.

Thanks Don. I'll give that test a try and see what happens. I'm pretty sure the lines are good (replaced about 3 yrs ago) and fairly short. About 2 1/2' from tank to cartridge filter, and 8-10" from filter to pump. I'll do the test to confirm tho.
