I have a 1960 Sea King (Model #GG8822A, equivelant to 5D17B Gale Buccaneer) 5 hp Deluxe outboard that seems to run great most of the time. Occasionally on my last two outings I began to feel a jerking feeling in the motor. It usually doesn't coincide with a change in the sound of the motor but a few times the pitch of the motor went up when I felt the jerking. After the first outing I replaced the plugs and lower unit oil. I've re-adjusted the low and high rpm fuel mixture with no effect. Don't know what to do next. Thank you.

KDC.... If the jerking you speak of gives forth the sensation that the engine is hitting something momentarily, that is due to worn lobes on the shifter clutch dog or/and forward gear.

This is the result of either the operator shifting into gear slowly, thinking they are taking it easy on the shifting components, when in fact they are allowing the lobes to contact each other many times at the lobe edges... or the shift cable/linkage is adjusted improperly.

Should this be the case, it will be necessary to dismantle the gearcase for inspection, and to repair/replace whatever is faulty.

It feels exactly like momentarily hitting something and as if there are gears slipping. After I figure out where to get the parts I can get right to the problem. Thanks much Joe. :)
