I have a new F20LPA 4 stroke, electric start, power tilt, long shaft. It is on a Carolina Skiff J14. I am about done with the 10 hour break-in procedure. The motor is starting and performing fine.
After the first few trips out, it started to sometimes make an odd noise. I am back away from the water now. I just ran it in a large garbage can for a while with my camera to try and record the sound for you all, but it would not make it again. Perhaps it needs to be really warmed up or under load as I seem to remember it appearing after I had been out for a while. After it makes it, it will stop sometimes as well and sound normal again.
Anyway, the sound is kind of a high pitched shrill almost like you used to hear in older automobiles with belt or power steering pump problems. It is less intense than that, however. It is not a constant tone, but has a slight rapid modulation to it like a disco whistle with a slower modulation (sorry for that reference). I neglected to test if it modulates with rpm increase, but I don't think it did. I see the belt has cogs on it, so it cannot be slipping. Perhaps some bearing situation? The oil is the recommended Yamalube put in by the dealer and the level is fine.
I will be talking to the dealer soon, but wanted the broader experience of this group. Could this be normal?
thanks very much for any ideas,
fred
