Intermittent starting...ignition problem

Sometimes I have had starting problems when I turn the ignition key (on a 2004 Tracker Panfish-Merc 25hp 4 stroke). It usually starts but sometimes absolutely nothing. Once I thought saw a pattern when I turned the key sharply it would crank right up. Today I looked at the fish finder and saw the battery reading did go down slightly when I turned the key and I could hear a very faint click in the back of the boat. It's done this on and off for quite a while but it usually ends up starting. Now not all. The battery terminals are clean and tight.
Update:took cover off and couldn't see any loose wires. Cleaned main wires going to start motor but still no crank. Took rubber mallet and hit start motor a few times still no start. Finally gave the solenoid and starter and connectors a few light taps and then it would start. It then started several times. Does that prove the start motor and solenoid are ok?
