intermittent tachometer

I have noticed that sometimes while running, the tachomoter starts bouncing, then dies, then works fine again. From other posts I thought it was the regulator/rectifier but when it dies the volts stay the same. I asked a mechanic and he said it could still be the regulator/rectifier or maybe the powerpack. Any ideas before I make my mechanic a rich man? Is it hard to replace either of these parts? I am thinking about trying it myself. I have a 1990 120 Johnson VRO.

thanks

Re: intermittent tachometer

Have you checked your wiring for a loose connection anywhere ? Check for continuity and then wiggle the heck out of the wiring with the probes on and check again, could be that simple, then again maybe not.
