Hi
I plan to paint my Volvo Penta SX-M Outdrive.
1 Clean and degrease with acetone? Or withe spirit ?
2 Mechanically abrade using aluminum compatible paper.
3 Apply International Yachtpaint Interprotect epoxy primer.
4 Trilux International antifouling paint.
According International Interprotect, before painting should apply one coat of etch primer.
But the International etch primer is now discontinued
So, could I apply the Interprotect directly in bare aluminum, and after paint with Trilux ?
Thanks
Almeida

After researching this International Yachtpaint company because I've never used any of their products before or even heard of them (I'm not a professional paint though), I see they have a "ask the expert" section on their website. They even tell you that if you can't find the answer to your painting questions, to contact them for everything you need to know. So seeing how nobody else even tried to answer your question, you should contact them and see what they say. I mean they certainly would know better then anybody else about their own products. Myself, I would say to NOT apply anything over bare aluminum without some type of quality primer. I even use Zinc Chromate bare aluminum primer before epoxy primer myself when painting aluminum. But that is just how I do things... Give them a contact and see what they say...

If your not taking it down to bare aluminum there is no need for a etching primer. Use Zinc Chromate and repaint.

Thanks for your answers.
The International Yachtpaint company is from AkzoNobel, they have many products in Europe.
I have large zones of the SX-M Outdrive in bare aluminum, so I need etching primer or only use Zinc Chromate Primer spray??.
According the local ?International expert" I should dilute at 25% the Interprotect, and them apply it directly in bare aluminum. After repaint with 100% Interprotect, and after paint with Trilux. (I have reservations about this ???)
On my local area I can?t find a good Zinc Chromate Primer and the Moeller cannot be shipped internationally.

Any Self Etching primer should be OK to use. The epoxy primer should be able to bond to it. I've yet to see epoxy have an issue bonding with any of them. If you can find a SE primer in your area, spray a test area with it and then spray some primer to confirm compatibility. Then proceed with the rest of the motor. Remember the Bare aluminum is the only area that requires the SE primer AND it only needs a Light Coating. Does NOT need to be thoroughly coated. You should almost be able to still see the metal bleeding through, then apply the epoxy primer. Probably 2 coats. Just follow the MFG's directions and you'll be good to go!!! We'd LOVE to see pics!!!!;)

You don't need any etching primer, alodine, or wash primers under Akzos epoxy primer, or most others ..its an either/or situation, in fact, its not recommended. Epoxy primer over a scuffed surface is all that's needed. I know PPG strictly warns against etching or wash primers under their DPLF epoxy primers.

I would also skip the acetone or sprit wipe, and use a wax/grease remover instead, After a good scrub with water and dawn dish soap.
