Just like to say hello my I'm nick 23 and have been boating/fishing on michgan and Canadian lakes all my life, now however I live in California and am entertaining the insane Idea of a live aboard, is anyone doing this and I am not talking about the rag tag flat house boat, I was thinking more along the lines of 35-45' with 2 state rooms and preferably diesel power.

woops seems I left a little out too, boat I am currently working on is my fathers 74 aluminum starcraft weighing in at 21' of ugly with two 1960 ish merc 50's, he got it for a steal with about 2k's worth of free tackle and down riggers only problem is the engines are crap, they work but I'd rather have better and it looks like a turd with green astro turf carpet, so needless to say I have my work cut out for me.

I am driving back to michigan in june I will take some pics and with any luck get it in the water, my dad isn't the mechanical type but loves boats too,"we are currently trying to convince my wife to go with the live aboard motor yacht" also checked out your photo bucket, great pics I love those old tri hulls they seem to have a certain ugly charm on me that I find irresistible :)

Re: intro and question

I have not lived aboard, but my brother lived many years on a sail boat in Sausalito, Ca. He love it, but his girl friends hated it (well his serious ones did, new ones thought it was great for a while). His new wife has him living in a house. In Sausalito, there is an entire sub-city based around the docks. Sail boats, yachts, house boats, barges and other vessels seem to coexist just like we do in iboats.

the thing i understand most about a live aboard, is you have to be very organized, stuff has to have a home, or it gets ungodly cluttered in a second. you are in the right ballpark for size.

Re: intro and question

I fought my hardest fight but the wife says no way, I can't make her do what she doesn't want to do nor can she make me, so we settled on getting some where in the 20-30 ft sail boat, for now. when I retire in 15 years she says it's ok for us to get a live aboard for when we are in California for the winter.:)
I gotta say I get off pretty easy from my wife when I am 23 and already have 3 ford broncos and a triumph.

hi nick....welcome to i boats

i used to live aboard a antique 43 foot motor yacht.......best lifestyle ive found...bar none hands down.....
it had every thing...washer dryer...fridge stove..shower.
the stress of the day...left you as soon you walked the pier to the vessel...then sat in the salon with a cup of coffie.

i think for a live aboard .....a motor vessel 38 foot minimum....sail...50 feet....(depending on the craft)...sail is very cramped.....

tashasdaddy is correct......

the life style is very simple..what comes on ..goes off.......the food is purchased for three days at a time...you have enough dishes for one meal...(2 forks...two plates...ect)...you have 4 sets of clothes...one to wear..one in the wash...(done every day)..one to work on the boat...and a suit in the closet.....the boat is scrubbed interior and exterior once a week...watertanks filled daily...garbage is removed immeadately...power is used sparingly....(no microwave when the dryer is running...ect)

we were at a very private location for the first 6 months...then had to move to a very busy harbour...(victoria bc's inner harbour)

in a packed harbour...you have no privacy...none...every conversation heard...every move known....you neighbor is three feet away from your door.....

however much i loved the life style ...i would caution a young man against this unless he was very financially secure....boats dont appreciate the way houses and land does....you will have no equity in the vessel....
in a house...after 25 years...you can cash out with a half a million in the bank....in a boat...you dont.

as for me...when i retire in a few years....(im 45) ill either buy land in belieze on the ocean...(im going down to get some in a month or two)..or fix up a 75 footer while i live on it !...most likely both.

hope that helps...see ya in restoration !

cheers

Re: intro and question

just a quick funny short story about living on a boat.....

my girl at the time and me were moored in a very private bay in victoria....(toovey bay)....it was so private...we sunbathed nude on top of the boat and never worried about any one ...as the bay was lined with steep treed cliffs...no one around...never closed the curtains...never locked the door.

we lost the mooage as the owners of the dock were returning from an around the world voyage with thet 85 foot yacht...so our 43 had to go !

we found morrage in the beautful inner harbour of victoria bc....very busy working harbour....

the morning after we moved the vessel....i got out of bed climbed the stairs from the aft cabin to the salon......naked....i streached...and scratched.
as i was yawning and streaching i heard a horn....it was a water taxi...driving by full of people at 7am...8 feet away !......what could i do....so i waved...!
