Hello all,
My name is Mike and I'm an outboard noob.
I just purchased a used jon boat with a 1986 25 hp Evinrude.
The previous owner told me it ran great until he put it in storage two years ago.
I didn't really do anything other then dump the old gas before firing it up. It ran pretty well so I decided to take it out on the river.
I went up river and took an electric trolling motor in case I ran into trouble I could easily float down to the launch.
As luck would have it I ran into a couple of sand bars. The last one caused my prop to stop turning. Figuring I broke a shear pin, I hid the boat and hunted.
I called a local shop and was told my motor did not have a shear pin and I spun a hub.
I took off the prop nut and the propeller and found this pin bent and somewhat free of the groove.

I didn't find any evidence of a torn or shredded hub.
Is this a drive shaft pin? The pin appears to be stainless.
I'm surprised that it bent and not the groove in the propeller.
My question is do I just need to replace this pin? I have a Seloc manual that came with the boat and I plan to get an oem but figured in the meantime I would ask the experts here.

Thanks for your help,
Mike

It's likely that you have spun the hub. The hub of the propeller has two parts with a rubber bushing in between them. When you strike an object the bushing slips to protect the gearcase. You would need to have a prop shop replace the rubber bushing.

The pin is a stainless drive pin and should be replaced with an OEM part. They sometimes bend or break due to the propeller being loose on the shaft.

What is the model number of your motor?

Just get another pin and give her a try. It's cheaper than getting another prop. Take a magic marker and make two corresponding marks (one on the hub and the other on the prop housing). Take a boat ride and lay the whip to her, back at the ramp, take a look at the two marks. If they are still lined up, you're golden.

That pin took a shot, but it was still connected and should have worked properly. If your motor just rev's upon powering up, it's a spun prop hub. If it doesn't go into gear at all, then it's another issue (gears, shift parts/linkage).

Thanks for the replies.
My model # is E25RLCDC.
Where is the hub located? Is it inside the prop?
Did the bent pin result from having the prop nut not tight enough?
The motor still goes into gear and the drive shaft spins, just not the prop.
Any suggestions on where I can get a good price on an oem manual?
