My mom has given me a large Ipad with cellular capability, so I want to use it for the navionics app. I have a large flat area on my dash, so I'm looking to find a case that will let me attach it securely to the dash, and quick release it leaving only a few screws or something behind on the dash. Does anyone know of a good product like this? So far everything I've found is either magnets (too weak) or a massive robot arm. I'm looking to have the ipad sit flush on the dash.

Before you mount it. take it outside and simply set it on the dash in the sunlight and make sure you can read the thing and it wont shut down from overheat in 5 minutes.

To answer the OP's question, they make a QD Ram Mount for most all applications.

I mounted my Samsung cell on a mount right in the center on top of my dash. It's in the sun and I use it all the time when running, to view my Mercury VesselView App. When we anchor I take it off and ut it in the Glove Compartment. So far, no problems. The Ram is fully adjustable, so I can tilt the screen to make it readable.

Most cell phones are rated to 95F operation, shutdown when battery temps hit 108F.

A 10 degree difference in ambient is huge when it comes to electronics operation

In retrospect I should have realized the heat issue. On the boat my phone often shuts down (or acts weird, making calls on its own and opening apps etc) when left in the sun on the boat.

So having it point up like that probably isn't an option. I guess I will have to go with a more vertical mount then, if I am to do it at all. The problem I have is that ipad is just so large (it is the biggest one they sell). that I don't want ot block my whole dash with it.

You will have to have a shade cover over the iPad. In reality it's not designed to be used outside
