irratic tack

For the last few seasons my tack has been playing up.Sometimes goes off the scale and stays there.flicks up and down when it feels like it.Tapping the glass makes it jump arund too.Do you think its a wire problem, or time for new tack.Sea ray seville 1998. quicksilver tack.

If you remove, clean, and reinstall the electrical connections on the rear of the tach and it still does what you said when you tap on it get a new tach.
