I was going to look at a 1995 70 hp Evinrude to replace my 1984 Force 85hp. Would this be a good swap? From what I have heard the Force hp rating was bit ambitious. How do the Evinrude motors rate?

erude rated at the prop, force at the power head. you should notice very little difference. besure to get the oil tank and controls, as your existing controls will not work with the new motor. if all checks out, it is a great motor.

BUYING A USED MOTOR

overall condition, condition of the place you are buying it from, usually tells you how they care for things. compression 100 + psi, and within 10% of each other, good strong blue spark, no water in the lower unit oil. look for discolored paint, (sign of over heat at
one time, also scarred up bolts, as why. have them start it. if they fail to put it in a barrell or tank, or on muffs, or in the water, to start it they don't know what they are doing. best yet is to take it for a 30 min to 1 hour test run. also if remote controlled motor, the controls should come with it.

As TD said , if it was taken care of yes they are very good motors, had the same basic design for a very long time.

I have an 81 50 and it looks almost identical to a 2004-2005 I'm sure they have changed bits and pieces but most of it is the same, when you get something right there is no need to change it.

As TD said, pop the hood and look for paint chipped off bolts, check the power head, it is painted is it is pretty easy to see if any major work has been done.

It would be money well spent to have it looked at by a marina, may cost you a bit but it will be much less than almost anything that could go wrong with it.

But yes, Evinrudes are very, very good engines.

Thanks for the info.
The motor is not on a boat and has not been run for about 8 years. The owner says it was used on Lake Okanagon (fresh water) and only has about 50 hours on it. From the pictures it looks like new. He says it was winterized every year by a mechanic and he removed it from the boat last summer. He stresses that it was not started in 8 years and was winterized last time it was shut down. Asking price is only $2100. and it comes with controls and tilt trim etc...
I will check it out tomorrow.
