Hello all,

Is a 75 HP is considered a big or too big motor to be use for trolling. I am trolling only in fresh water lakes and my boat is a 16.5 aluminium hull with a 1998 - 75 HP Force. Will it hurt ?
I am asking because I saw few guys using their 80 or 90 HP for trolling.

Thanks

Smoky

Perfectly acceptable. If you troll frequently many anglers in my neck of the woods install a prop of slightly reduced pitch to reduce engine load and increase rpms slightly.Just don't overshoot the WOT recommended range.

You could and a trolling plate would help but
your motor would be happier if you used a kicker
instead.

You are going to have to slow the boat down a bit. My setup is similar to yours, 16' 70hp Force. It idles at @650rpm, and moves the boat at 3 mph. Too fast for me.

If a kicker is out of the question, then a drift sock rigged up under the boat will slow you down and be out of the way for fishing. Walleye In-Sider magazine, July-Aug-Sept issue has a good article on this set up. Article is called "surge solutions".

Just make sure you do your decarbs on your engine a little more often, as excessive idling is going to carbon it up.

Thank you all for the replies,

About the trolling plate I don't think I could use this, since I have a set of Doel fins on my motor ? What you think ?

Smoky
