Is a 40hp Mariner made by Yamaha or Mercury?

I am looking at a 40HP Mariner engine on Saturday and the guy is telling me it was made by Yamaha? I thought Mariner was made by Mercury. Can anyone shed some light on how to tell who made the engine and suggest how to tell what year it is when I go to see it. I know most mfg's have a code system.

If this is infact the 40 that was made by yamaha- were they good engines? The person selling tells me the belive it's an early 90's model. Any overkill of info is greatly appreciated!!!!

Yamaha makes some of the best engines in the world. During the 70s a lot of the engines were made by Yamaha, by the late 70s only the engines below 60 hp were generally Yammies. By the early to mid 80s the engines were, except for colour and some cowls, identical to Mercury. When the assembled engines were test run, those which fired instantly and ran well were painted black and the others grey:devil:

Is that true? If it ran ok but not geat they made it a mariner or is this an old myth?

I nevr had a "good running mercury" to begin with. I always had bad luch with them. So I gues you are telling me I am asking for a beating if I buy a 1989 Mariner 40HP?

40hp mariners are great motors, nothing wrong with a mariner, I have a 90's mariner 40hp and never had any problems with it ...
