I just bought a envinrude 25 motor and its around a 1978 or so maybe a little older im not sure, but I have had a little trouble with it, when i first got it it ran great at high speeds but only hit on one cylinder at low speeds, now it hits on one cylinder all the time, I have had the motor for 6 months and 5 of that has been in the shop. the boat dude says that this motor is junk becuase it has points instead of cdi ignition, what is the problem with it and why is running like junk

Check Compression first to see if it's worth getting further into. Then get another Mechanic!! Just because it has the old points & condenser set-up, does'nt mean it's junk. Can you give more info about what's going on with it and what was done by you or the mechanic? Maybe we can help you get her going!!

thanks rick my boat dude changed the head gasket, and did a compression test it has good compresion but just wont run on both cylinders. He is in the process of putting new coils, points, and wires. he says that the motor is not worth the money but to me it is

Howdy, Longdude.

It's your wrench that isn't worth the money. Does he seriously think that an engine that has been in regular use for 50 years (RD-10 Johnson was the first OMC 25, in 1951) by hundreds of thousands of boaters is junk?

You are wasting money on this jerk.

Give us the Model number, so we can get the exact year (LOTS of changes and improvements in those 50 years). Then get a manual and some basic hand tools and we will help you fix it yourself for just a few bux.

That danged engine is older than that wanna-be wrench, and probably a dam site more reliable. (Grumble grumble!)

Let us know! :)

Yes, I had an old 25 (early 80's or so) Johnson and what a workhorse it was! Bought it brand new, and put a ton of hours on it. (it probably still is working hard, as I sold it to a guy in Alaska for practically what I paid for it!) It is a great engine. 100% saltwater use, and other that me forgeting to grease a zerk fitting in the shifter mechanism, it gave me virtually no trouble at all.

I do think that with shop time costing what it costs, it does not make sense to own an older engine unless you can do at least the relatively minor repairs yourself. All of what you have mentioned are relatively easily performed by an average person with just the minimum of standard tools, the help of the very knowledgable people on this board like JB and Joe, among others, and a service manual.

Good luck!

I miss my old dependable 25!!!
