Is a Percentage Leakage Test recommended to diagnose combustion components of O/B engines? Such as, in the 1970s we used a Sun Engine Analyzer with a Percentage Leakage Gauge on it. With the engine in the compression mode (just before TDC, valves closed, etc.) we added compressed air and the gauge showed the percentage of air that was lost. Next, we looked and listened for the air being lost if this was excessive or above the recommended limits. I guess this would be tricky on an O/B. On a car?s engine, we listen at the carb for int. valve prob., tailpipe for exhaust valve problems and checked for bubbles in the radiator for head gasket problems. I?ve done quick test with just compressed air vs a gauge when a compression test was bad enough (for Ideas). Keeping the engine from turning was a job w/o help. OR! Would this fall in the KISS category?

Last, a friend came by with a scope he uses to check his plane?s valves, pistons (which will show cylinder wall also) to keep his plane certified to fly.

Just do a compression/spark test. If your scope shows nothing and the compression is even on all cylinders. Then go for it.J
