Is a trim tab needed with a Trophy Plus SS 4-blade prop?

I recently purchased a 15 1/2' fiberglass boat with a 91' 90HP Merc. It came with a 13 3/4" x 21P Trophy Plus SS 4 blade prop. For some reason the previous owner had removed the trim tab (it may have something to do with clearance issues as there is only 1/8" clearance between the prop and the tab with one installed). Is it normal to run without one with this type of prop?

It may be normal, but it is dumb.

The 4 blade prop generates more torque steer during holeshot than a three blade.

Without a trim tab you will need both hands to hold the wheel, and that might not be enough.

Good luck. :)

You can probably get what they call a "high performance" trim tab that is set back enough to clear the prop you have.... Check with your dealer...

If the standard one will not work for you... :)

I asked a couple of dealers and they told me I can either put a flat one in or cut a notch in mine which I did.

Would taking the trim tab back out cause this type of prop to slip more and bring up rpms? The boat appears to be over propped (4400 @ WOT) and I'm wondering why the previous owner had removed the trim tab.

I also have the trophy plus prop too. it doesnt effect my trim tab....but the holes in the side of the hub are made so that you can agust exhaust flow through them by inserts to allow for blowout so you can maintain an rpm range on take off.also if you are running 4400 rpm you need to go down in pitch to run 5000-5500 rpm....you should not use the prop you have.

What pitch are you running and on what motor? What kind of boat?

It is a 25 pitch on a 97 150 efi merc mounted on a 97 ranger r80. WOT with 2 people and gear it run 5500 rpm. i was having trouble with to much blow out and i noticed that 3 of the 4 vent plugs fell out.

2 different hulls reacting totally different to 1 blade design....no apples to apples here.
4400RPM is going to get the best of your engine, as in ruin it..5600-5700 would be a good target, but just changing props isn't always the answer.
Do we know we have a good, healthy engine?? How about fresh fuel?? Is the engine mounted on the transom clear down, or raised any??
Some people mount a prop more for looks than actually mounting the best option.
We may have a possible tach issue as well, because I believe a 21P should not be over-propped on a 90 mounted to a 15-1/2ft boat.

I'm not ruling out the possibility it could be the motor, just that most of people I talked to said that's an awful lot of prop for that motor. Fresh gas was the first thing I did as soon as I brought it home. I'm not sure how healthy the engine is because I only heard it run on the muffs before I bought it(too much debree in the river to take it out). The compression was 150-147.5-145 when I checked it. It seemed to run fine, idle is a little rough but it doesn't stall or anything. I'm not sure how old the plugs are but they didn't look too bad so I didn't change them (the dealers I talked to told me the gapless plugs don't foul and that they should last about five years).

The first time out I thought it seemed to rev kind of low and labour when I was just in gear with barely any throttle applied (I launch at a shallow creek so you have to travel slowly for the first little while). I bought a brand new Teleflex tach, set it to 6 pulse and checked my rpms the next time out. That's when I noted the 4400 rpm @ WOT (I'm not sure how accurate boat tachs normally are but if they are like sleds they read a couple hundred rpm high).

I borrowed a 19" pitch, 3-blade aluminum to try and it must weigh about a 1/4 as much as the Trophy Plus. The only problem is I can't get the brass bushing off the prop shaft to replace it with the one that goes with the aluminum one. Do you need a puller or something? Wouldn't all the extra weight of the SS really slow down how quickly the motor can bring up the rpms when you punch it (kind of like a big flywheel)?

I got the brass bushing off this morning. Are these bushing supposed to be used with a specific black plasitc hub insert? The reason I'm asking is the guy I borrowed the prop from didn't give me his hub insert so I put mine in. The problem is mine is counter sunk about an 1/8" so when I use the brass bushing that came with the aluminum prop it leaves an air gap (which will give the black plastic bushing room to move and will likely allow it to slip).

If I use my plastic hub and my brass two step bushing the smaller step fills this gap and the larger step sits flush against the surface of the prop. I'm assuming that the black plastic hub that's supposed to go with the aluminum prop fits flush with the surface of the prop that contatcs the bushing (so that there is no air gap)?

Do you know how many differnet sizes of inserts you can get for this type of prop? I noticed that there is an "L" on the ones in my prop.
