I have read and heard that I should stay away from Bayliners as my first boat purchase? Why is that?

Re: Is Bayliner a boat to avoid?

bayliners are good boats, most just had bad owners, the 80's early 90's boat were entry level boats, and entry level owners. the most of the boats were not properly maintained, never covered, washed. they were just used. there are some well maintained older bayliners out there.

Buying a boat

1st you need to decide what you want to use it for, fishing, cruising, or water sports.

2nd how many people adults, children you want on board of the average outing.

3rd outboard, inboard-outboard, or inboard power plant.

4th Budget, what you want to pay, and what you are willing to pay, when you find
Exactly what you want.

You can hire a marine surveyor, to inspect the boat, or you can do it yourself.

You are mainly looking for soft spots in the deck, transom, cracks, all signs of a rotten, under frame. You walk all over the deck, that a mallot, or hammer with wooden handle, using handle, tap all over the transom, a shape rap is good solid base, a thud, is questionable base.

The motor should be clean, no spots where the paint is discolored, or pealing from heat, having run hot. (This part for outboard motors Compression should be atleast 100psi, and within 10% of each other,)
Spark on all cylinders, good pee stream, check lower unit for water in oil.

The overall condition of the boat will tell you a lot, as to how it has been maintained.
boat motor combo, A 30 year old may be in better condition, than a 3 year old.

LOL. I read that from you in another post.

#1 Cruising, wakeboarding, tubing, cruising

#2 At least 2 adults, 3 kids. Sometimes 4 adults, 5 kids

#3 Under 15k

Will that narrow it down? I am totally looking hard now :)

Re: Is Bayliner a boat to avoid?

I have a bayliner, 26ft, had others. In the smaller boats I dislike the quality of the seating, fabric etc. on some of the 5yr old and older bayliners. The very late models seem to be better. If I were buying an open bow ski boat I would look (not hard) for a garage stored high level boat, like a Chapparal or Sea Ray. They simply have much nicer seats and fit and finish. Nothing mechanical or structural wrong with a bayliner 19 or 20ft bowrider, I just think in a tough economy you can get something even nicer for little money. Look for at least the 4.3l V6 mercruiser, a great ski motor. I have a good friend with a Chap 18' open bow, really nice sliding, tilting adjustable buckets, 4.3 does 55+mph and the interior has held up very well after 4yrs of heavy family use.
