is engine to big for boat

hi im thinging of buying a bigger engine for my boat i have a 17foot grp boat built to take a long sharf outboard what is the biggest engine i could put on it im thinking of buying a 50hp will the transom be strong enough because these engins can be very heavy and throw out a lot of power

A 17 footer should be able to take more than 50 but you should check to see if you have a BIA plate and it will tell you the max HP and I would not exceed that!
