I have bought a 2 stroke YAMAHA 5 (made in 2002 y.) outboard and very satisfied with it, but it was not new, no manual.

Now I need to change lower unit gear oil, but met a problem. In the page I learned, that I could use either standard “GL-5” hypoid oil or special marine one, which is practically the same GL-5 just with emulsifiers – water absorbers, for the case some water gets in the gear.

I bought special “Shell Marine Nautilus” gear oil and was amazed, when found on the package written, that it is GL-4 oil. (API GL-4, OMC 1632; Gear oil SAE 90). Isn’t here any mistake? Why this oil is made not of GL-5 base?

Sigis Stasaitis, Lithuania

Hello, I am unfamiliar with the ratings you give for the oil. Apparently it is labeled differently here in the US. You should contact a Yamaha representative, and ask for a recommendation.

Yamaha service manuals say to use GL-4 SAE 90 oil in the lower units. Who told you GL-5?
