1993 crossflow...this is the 2nd lower I've had an issue with new seals at the upper driveshaft housing.

pressure testing afterward, still leaks. Found if I turn the upper one around, so the spring is down instead of up...no more leak!

I know they don't go like this according to the oem manual...but no leaking this way.

is it ok to have them like this? Can't really see why not

odd.

Is that a double seal? If it is they go in back to back i believe, so the lower seal Would have the spring facing down anyways. Is the drive shaft in good condition?

Hi

Yes, double...upper and lower different part numbers.

yes, decent condition shafts. The lower seal is supposed to be down, upper upwards.

seems tighter if the upper points down, doesn't allow the shaft to move as much side to side (that's with impeller housing off).

this one I just did, pointing down...now tests good up to 15lbs. But leaked if the upper pointed up.

will leave it this way if not detrimental.

The lower seal is supposed to keep the oil in, while the upper seal is supposed to keep water from the waterpump out, hence the reason they are mounted back to back.

It sounds as though the real cause of the trouble might be a worn bearing

These lower units have a 2 piece driveshaft.------The upper part does feel loose.

The driveshaft has to be vertical in vise/stand to test as if it lean to a side it will leak(2 piece). Also need to vacuum test as it can pass pressure and fail vac test.

Was watching another similar post as this..

I can now say, if kept vertical (centered in seal), and turned by hand while pressurized--no leaking. If pushed to one side it will leak for sure.

So, when the impeller is installed, this keeps it centered....and surely when the lower is bolted on and the shaft is engaged to the Crank splines---it will be centered and solid as far as movement goes.

I'm confident the seals are doing thier thing now. Will check after some run time.

Thaks
