Is it OK to run the bilge pump dry?

I've done a search and didn't see an answer, but I am curious....

My first boat, a 1991 Sunbird Corsair 198, takes on a small amount of water. The bilge pump doesn't have a float switch yet, so sometimes I hit the bilge switch to see if any water pumps out. If there isn't enough water to pump out, will this hurt the pump??

Thanks.

Not recommended the pump impeller is lubricated by the water in the pump

Its ok to let it run for short periods of time, but as with most pumps its not a good idea to let them run for longer then a couple minutes. pumps cause friction, friction causes heat, and heat can damage your pump without water to cool it. it could kill it or at least shorten its life

so it's ok to hit the switch to see if water pumps out, and if no water....switch off, right?

Ya , that won't hurt anything just to kick the pump on for a bit, it isn't like an outboard pump that is rubber and actually rubs on the housing.

A bilge pump doesn't actually contact the housing, there is a small gap between the impeller and housing so you are fine.

I wouldn't leave it run for 30-40 minutes but long enough to see if you have water is fine.

it depends on the style pump......

Centrifugal and diaphragm pumps can be
run dry for a period of time without damage,
whereas a flexible-impeller pump the
impeller will burn up within a minute or two.
