Is it okay to test motor without Core/Freeze Plugs?

Can I start a motor without core plugs to test to see if I have a cracked motor? Will it do any harm? It doesn't look cracked, but I want to double check. If all goes well I will pull the motor and put in brass and reseal.

Thanks.

Re: Start without Core Plugs

How are you going to test for a cracked block if you can't keep the cooling system pressurized?

Start by checking the oil... if it has water and you are missing core plugs you have a cracked blcok.

Sorry I am new and learning on the fly.

Thanks for the info. oil is clean, no water. Where can I get temporary expandable plugs to pressurize the system?

Also, where can I find a good post on pulling the motor to replace the core plugs?

Thanks.

Napa is where you can get the expandables. But they are just temporary for testing purposes.

Kind of depends on what you have. You never told us what you were working on, other than freeze plugs.

1993 OMC Cobra 50. I do not see any visual cracks. Thanks.
