Is it possible to change an I/O Bayliner Capri to an outboard?

I have a 1988 Bayliner Capri that the p.o. let the block freeze and crack. The hull is near perfect, but the interior will need some major work. It isn't going to be a cheap repair to replace the block or the entire motor. Does anyone know if it is possible to hang an outboard motor on the back of the boat without alot of fabricating? I have access to an 85 horse ob and would really like to use it if I could. Thanks for any help that you can give me on this.

Not without major work. With the interior needing repair in that vintage bayliner, it usually means the boats are rot- boxes and need stringers and a new transom.. You can find an outboard powered water ready boat for what you will have invested getting that boat back in the water.

I can tell you that I'm 99.999% certain the INTERIOR of the hull is probably shot. The floor, transom, and stringers are all most likely the consistency of a wet sponge. Its time for that boat to go to the dump.

I think this might be true, even if the inside of the boat is in great shape. Re-working a transom the right way is quite an undertaking. Take a look through some of the restoration threads and see if you're in for that kind of project.

it can be done, has been done...but will you trust it once it's done? Transoms for outboards are built to withstand different stresses than I/O's. The cap and splashwell of fiberglass outboards are as much a part of the transom strength as the wood in the transom.

At the very least, you'll need to fabricate and glass in at least 2 knees to help support the transom from the forces of the outboard, and you will have to replace the transom since you will have a gaping hole where the outdrive was.

Essentially, the amount of work doing just the transom might be more than you want to deal with. On top of that, you may find ( likely ) that the stringers are in need of repair/replacement. If you are ambitious and have a good place to work on it, have at it. If not, then I'd let someone else pick up the boat for dirt cheap and move on to the next one. If the boat is just something you have to keep, then you might as well start preparing for a few itchy nights grinding fiberglass.

Lets look at the facts:

1980's Bayliner
Engine block is confirmed to be cracked, boat needs repower.
Interior needs "major work".

Honestly, I would cut my losses and get rid of the boat. At this rate, it is likely the stringers and transom are shot and in need of restoration. (PO let the engine get damaged from lack of winterization, interior needs major work - its sound to say this boat was not taken care of, common of the owners of this vintage Bayliner.)
There is no doubt you could pick up another boat in running condition for much less time and money than you'd have into this project that once done, is still a 25 year old Bayliner.

yes it is possible. however as others pointed out, the amount of labor and materials to do it will be high, much much higher if you have rotten stringers, transom, and floor.

assume $1500+ for materials, and about 200 hours of time.

Then there is the issue that redfury points out.

It can be done, and you'd be crazy to do it (on that particular boat).

I'm with h2odick, cut your losses.

Would you guys do the same on a 86 21' Bayliner Trophy? it had a volvo I/O in it that was junk and ive toyed with the thought of putting O/B's on it

Being an '88, I bet it has the OMC stern drive.

would you fix up a wrecked 1988 ford taurus? walk away from that one (I hope you haven't bought it already). That's a "free" boat.

Start your own thread ... it's against the rules to hijack someone's existing thread.

BUT the short answer is the same... replace the I/O or buy a different hull... the cost to swap and less than ideal performance are not worth it on a 25 year old low value boat
