Re: Is it possible to install just the upper unit? alpha 1 gen 2
98' 4.3 alpha 1 gen.2
I have THE ISSUE of starboard side running much hotter than port. After a few parts and a lot of reading and some tests I believe I'm not getting the propper volume of water.
Fresh and saltwater use and basically lives on a trailer.
New Parts
Manifold/elbows/shutters old ones were one piece style and original 13 yrs!
Thermostat...while replacing I inspected the housing it's clear
raw water pump
Still had the problem. this was last august
Now I'm digging deeper.
-Hoses to manifolds clear
-Remove the lower unit and stick a hose on the water tube in the upper drive once again bearley any water out of the starboard idel relief port unless I block the port side relief. engine not running
-Pull the upper unit off jam a hose in to the water port on bell housing. sweet all smiles, even water flow at relief ports, fire up the engine it holds at 160? (which it typically did) the elbows are very similar in temp and cool to the touch, no steam exiting the starboard relief port! Getting there
-Now i stick the hose on the upper unit water port where it meets the bell housing. Hoping to blast out a blockage by reversing the typical flow. didn't see anything come out. Removed the water tube, clear, inspect water passage with a strong light didn't see any problems.
So now we are current and I was just looking to install only the upper housing to retest, perhaps I cleared something out and didn't notice.
I sucked it up, put on the lower unit (with only two bolts) and installed the drive. Heading out now to remove the lower and stick the house on the water tube within the upper housing and see what happens.
Is it okay to run the engine with just the upper unit, no gear oil? thinking it's possible because there is no load on it???
Thank you
