Is it possible to Upgrade the ignition system on a 1970 Merc 200 20hp.

I have a merc 200 20hp SN 2891843, Which are known to have stator problems. Is it possible to get all the componants from a newer engine, and upgrade to electronic ignition. Thus Doing away with the points and the unreliable Stator. What little ive looked on the net. it looks like the engine blocks are pretty much the same, up to the mid 70s anyways. Im just courious. i now have close to $400.00 in replacing the electronics in the last year with 2 new coils, new stator, (another stator on the way under warrenty) point wires and insulators. and i still haven't boughten the $80.00 points yet.

ouch man get them points they are essential to your rig running properly bad points cause fluxuation in the electrical system and timing of the engine RE Bad stator etc
