You've probably seen my mercury 850 posts about flywheel pullers and lifting eyes.

I've come to the conclusion that getting the flywheel off is not the obstacle and lifting the powerhead is the real problem.

Is it safe to lift a merc 850 by threading something on over where the flywheel nut is. For example, take the flywheel nut off thread a long nut over that has a ring welded to it over the end of the crank and lift by that.

I'll get this figured out and leave you guys alone soon.

I would say no, all your force will be on your crank and seals. There are always threaded holes on blocks to insert a large bolt or two for the purpose of lifting..but don't lift on that crank!

my merc 150's and older 175's had a 3 bolt pattern on top of the flywheel for the lifting eye to be bolted to.... your pulling on the crank when using the lifting eye, motor is balanced etc. I don't know about your model, but I expect the lifting eye is to be bolted to flywheel also, which will pull on the crank when lifted...

Yeah, there is actually a mercurty part number for a lifting eye that threads into the center of the flywheel. I thought that lifting by the flywheel is the same as lifting by the end of the crank. I would assumt that mercury designed to be done this way. I just wanted to make sure that it would be the same thing.

I'll probably be buying the lifting eye. Mercury part.

Hi

All newer Evinrudes V4 and V6 are lifted by lifting eye attached to the flywheel and threrby cranck - no problem its less than 400 lbs - forces on cranck when running are much, much higher.
