Just needing to know if it is safe to reuse gear oil {please forgive me if I got the terminology wrong.. noob :( } from the lower unit if it has just been used for a few hours? Got it out after winterization and noticed the engine was overheating so I think its time to replace the impeller, but seeing as we put $30.00 worth of gear oil in it I dont want to have to buy new if I dont have too, but I will if it is neccesary.

Thanks!

Howdy,

I suspect most of us probably wouldn't..........but, I think you could. You would just want to ensure that it is not contaminated with water or debris etc. Mercury allows 100hrs before recommending replacement.

Gear oil is not subject to combustion by-products and the contamination from it. Water and metallic debris is what you should watch for. If it's clean and has no water in it, I see nothing wrong with filtering it through some fine screen of sorts, and reusing it.

Would you re-use engine oil because it only had 1000 miles of the 3000 recommended? Not exactly the same animal, but close ... ;)

Yeah we went ahead and just dumped it. Better to be safe than sorry!

Not boat related at all

Um.....However, who, except people that make money changing oil, recommend changing oil after only 3000 miles?

1000 miles on engine oil is NOTHING. (this is not 1960)

A few hours on a marine engine is also NOTHING......... and a few hours on a stern drive (AGAIN assuming no water intrusion or other debris intrusion), is LESS than NOTHING. I wouldn't waste the oil or the time to change it.

But hey, anything that makes you think you feel better, will make you feel better...............

Knock yourself out!
