Is it worth it to buy a longer shaft outboard for a good price?

My brother's friend has a late 90s early thousands johnson 9.9. I'm almost positive it's a long shaft. He says he might give it to me for free, But we'd probably pay 200 or whatever. I do't know if it runs I just saw it quickly. Should I do it? Is it worth it? Couldn't I just Bolt a double 3/4 ply sheet to the transom with wing nuts so I can remove it?

Hi c. Assuming the motor runs well, free-$200 is pretty good for a late model near 10hp motor. Don't worry about the longshaft part. You can always build a small transom riser, if need be.

It's an inflatable so that would make extra problems due to its weight.

Small inflatables up to 3.00/3.20 mt can handle a 9.9 with no issue at all, being a 2 strokes is much lighter than same 4 strokes model. The long shaft adds at most just 1.5 to 2.0 Kg more weight to the short shaft same model. You can always install a transom mount to raise the engine accordingly. Just inflate all sib's tubes to it's factory recommended working pressure with gauge.

Happy Boating
