I have a 16ft Tracker with a Mercury 25 hp motor. Checking with the GPS it will push my boat 26 mph and gives no trouble at all. I have a friend that has an Evenrude 40 hp, a 94 model that has been in a storage building for over 10 yrs, he wants $300. for it. How much better performance should I expect with the extra 15 hp and do you guys think its worth the $300. for the extra power? 40hp is as high as my boat is rated for although if I could find a good 50 at a good price I could make it a 40 and run it.:)

your 25 is 62.5 % of the rated hp. 70% is considered the lowest Hp for the boat to perform decently. the 40 will make a bid difference. if you don't buy that 40 for $300. and it has spark and good compression. i want to know where it is. i'll pay shipping to get it.

An engine that has been in storage for over 10 years is going to cost a few bux to get ready for the water. Then you will need all new controls, too. Don't get the idea that $300 is going to put you on the water with a 40. Think $500, minimum and depending on what the engine might need, maybe more.

In good running condition and properly rigged and propped the 40 should push your tracker to the mid 30s. Your 25 is bare minimum to get good performance from that hull and 26mpg is very good for that setup.

IMHO, if you can get that 40 to run then it's worth a good bit more than $300. If it were me I'd take the chance.

As far as performance, you'd be upping the power by 60% - that's a fairly significant increase so you'll likely be pleased.
