Is it worth it?

Okay, I know I have posted several questions lately about painting my boat. I ran across a good deal today though. I found a early 80's or late 70's cajun bass boat. Everything seems to be in working order. The owner is letting me take it for a spin tomorrow at the lake. It has a '79 Mercury inline 6 90HP on it. The boat is in very good shape. The paint is faded a little but no damage. He wants $1500. What do you guys think? Forget painting my even older boat I own now. This is much nicer.

I think it is. Just make the usual checks.

Compression.

L/U lube.

Walk around inside and look for soft spots in the floor.

Sounds like a good deal. Also check for cracks around the transom and other soft spots as mentioned above. See what the oil in the lower unit looks like, make sure it has no water mixed in with it.
You can bring back some of the shine with rubbing compound and then a wax, like MAGUIARS 3 part system.
Good Luck :)

like they say, check the compression, floor, cracks around the transom. sounds like a good deal if everything checks out.

I didn't buy it. The transom was "soft" as my mechanic said, the ignition key was broke off in the keyhole, the gauges didn't work, and the steering cables were very stiff and needed replaced. It is worth the money, it's just more work than I care to put into one right now. I'll keep my old boat and be happy I guess.

A boat in the pond is worth two laying around the yard! Your "ship" will come in one day and in the meantime the good folks here can help keep your present rig runnin' and give good advice when you are ready to buy. I can't believe how much I've learned just reading the posts. I'm sure it will save me money and trouble in the future. Good luck finding the next one!
