Is multipurpose lubricant the same as marine grease?

I am replacing my shift shaft bushing and my service manual is saying to "lubricant oil seals and o ring with multipurpose lubricant". Is that the same as marine grease? Or do I need to buy something different?

For lubing o'rings and seals, it will work.

The service manual must be old. In the 1970s and 80s Mercury marketed more than one type of Grease. One was called multi purpose, other was 2-4-c, still another was anti-Corrosion grease, and finally, Special Lubricant 101. At that time Multipurpose was a bearing grease, 2-4-c was not to be used in bearings. 2-4-c was later reformulated to include Teflon in the mix. Currently, 2-4-c has again reformulated and is bearing friendly. Multi-purpose not currently in the lineup. For the O-rings and seals, a non-fiberous grease that will mix into the gear oil.

Does the label say where it can be used, and more importantly, where not to use it?

The grease you're holding is a Calcium based grease(great water resistance), the multi-purpose grease mentioned is/was more likely a Lithium or Sodium based grease. Different characteristics, and not compatible with each other. Put a bit in a container with some gear oil and see if it dissolves into the oil, or if it clumps and participates form.
Use it sparingly and it should be fine. It is just so the seal and o-ring aren't dry when installed , the grease keeps them from tearing/scuffing/snagging.
