is my engine yamaha or mariner????

Ive just brought a yamaha engine but on the plate where the serial number is it says mariner 40 ML and the serial number is 6E9 L 361398. I want to buy a service manual for it but I dont know weather to get a yamaha or mariner manual. I think the engine was made in 1993 but Im not totally sure. I also need to know what fuel mix to use is it 50:1 or 100:1.

You'd get a Yamaha manual for that specific engine. It's likely that Yamaha had Mariner/Merc make that motor for them, but you don't need to worry about that. Not sure about the mix ratio- if it's not oil injected, contact a Yamaha dealer's parts department and see if they can tell you.

near as I can tell a 93 Mariner is a 4 cylinder,Yamaha is a 3 cylinder
Partial Yamaha model number is 40ML.

Well thats as clear as mud,ha ha ha I know the engine is made by yamaha for mariner,Ive been told to use a 100:1 fuel oil mix and to use a 50:1 mix, and it is deffinatly a 2 cylinder, ha ha ha so now what????????

Nobody here told you to use 100:1. That was an experiment that failed. Use 50:1

50/1 and buy the correct mariner manual.
while true some mariners were built by yamaha for brunswick marine they may or may not use the same yamaha parts the old C40 two cyl yamaha used.

There are some motors that use a 100:1 mix but you have to use a full synthetic, not synthetic blend or mineral based.

while most 2 stroke yamaha engines under 40 HP can run on the 100/1 we find, like jonnyrude did, that it tends to NOT offer enough protection during long periods of inactivity(30 day or more) and does NOT offer any protection for ANY fuel or cooling system degradation.
did NOT say failure, SAID degradation.
at 50/1 all you will notice is you used 16Oz of oil to 6 gallons rather than 8 oz.
other than that, nothing will change.


run the 50/1 and be happy.
like I said, occasionally merc specified something slightly different than what yamaha made, sometimes its enough that the yamaha maual wont quite work.
sometimes all it was was paint color.
its the same with some of the mercury stuff built for yamaha.

You are all very funny, but I was waiting to see if I got anymore conflicting advice. In this post Ive been told to buy a yamaha manaul and a mariner manual ????? My engine is a mariner made by yamaha, so the mariner manual would be correct. And as for time you yanks are behind English time by a good few hours ha ha ha, us English will always be ahead of you lot. Lol.
